The Absolute Success Table

This table ranks the 'absolute' success of each club relative to each other since the formation of the FA Cup in 1871 and the introduction of League football in 1888 and is presented as a cumulative number.

Qualifying Criteria

Any club to have been active in at least one season of League football

Clubs are ranked based on their absolute score accumulated since their foundation regardless of at what point their debut in League football occurred. As a result Cup performances that pre-date a club's League entry contribute to their accumulated total.

League Football

Points are awarded based on the number of clubs in each tier and the finishing position of the respective clubs

Tiers themselves are subject to a defined multiple

A higher multiple is applied to the top tier e.g. the Premier League and the lowest multiple applied to the bottom tier e.g. League Two

Clubs that finish in the top 3 positions of the top tier are awarded bonus points

All active League clubs attract points relative to their finishing position

Cup Football

Each Cup competition is awarded a maximum value

Any club finishing in the Quarter Finals or beyond of the cup competition is awarded points relative to that maximum value

A Quarter Final appearance is equivalent to a quarter of the maximum value, a Semi Final a half, Runners Up attract three quarters of the maximum value

The European Cup / Champions League is the most valuable cup competition, the EFL Trophy the least

Clubs finishing below the quarter finals of a cup competition attract no points for that season

This methodology is consistently applied across all seasons

The Years Active Table

This table ranks the 'relative' success of each club based upon their foundation date and subsequent active seasons and is presented as a seasonal performance average.

Qualifying Criteria

Any club to have been active in at least one season of League football

Clubs are ranked based on their absolute score (Accumulated since their foundation regardless of at what point their debut in League football occurred. As a result Cup performances that pre-date a club's League entry contribute to their accumulated total) divided by the number of seasons that have elapsed, and for which points have been awarded to any club, since the club's recorded foundation.

Clubs that cease to trade will not accumulate further active seasons post their liquidation.

Clubs that fall out of the League structure but who continue to trade will accumulate further active seasons regardless of whether they regain entry into the Football League.

Note

All points are calculated as under the Absolute Success Table
